"Nevertheless, many commentators and fans regarded the Cup Winners' Cup as weaker than the UEFA Cup, which had more and better teams from the stronger European leagues"

The UEFA cup always had better teams participating than the ECWC

Comma, why do you try and do football chat?

It's really not for you.

That is wrong comma.
The Fairs became the UEFA in 71 but the ECWC kept going until 99 when it was merged with the EUFA which then turned into the Europa in 09.

I preferred the ECWC
But then again I was never big on coconut shys & bumper cars

Re: So now as long as Man U win the cup, we're in?
The competition was initially only open to teams from cities that hosted trade fairs and where these teams finished in their national league had no relevance. Early competitions also featured a one city, one team rule.

The above refers to the inter cities fairs cup.

I reiterate that when we won the ECWC it was one of only two trans national european competitions that qualifiers had to win something domestic to qualify for.

It was not until 1971 that the fairs cup and ECWC merged to form the Eufa Cup. this competition comprising domestic cup winners and high domestic league placing teams.

Re: So now as long as Man U win the cup, we're in?
At the time of us winning the ECWC it was definitely second only to the European Cup
The Fairs Cup (at that time) was very much a Mickey Mouse competition that nobody took much notice of
The FA Cup was a much more prestigious competition then than it is now. Everyone watched the Cup Final back then. Saturday afternoons on Cup Final day everywhere was deserted
It's only since Manu devalued it by opting out a few years ago, that people regarded it as less important

"Me and mates all grew up truly believing the EUFA was bigger as did most. "

Well, me and my mates grew up believing the ECWC was more prestigious as it was recognised by UEFA

Re: So now as long as Man U win the cup, we're in?
The reason it was considered bigger by the sports press was because it was harder to win as 2nd and 3rd from each league were involved instead of cup winners who could be weaker sides ( us in the 2nd division, Southampton, Sunderland, Wimbledon, Coventry, Wigan, even Millwall reached a final)

Me and mates all grew up truly believing the EUFA was bigger as did most.

The sports press regarded UEFA as bigger but UEFA regarded the ECWC as the more prestigious, oh and what Sven said

comma, wrong, the Inter Cities Fairs cup was active at the time we won the ECWC

Re: So now as long as Man U win the cup, we're in?
I just googled it and got this from WIKI.
It seems It is not fact and I was wrong though growing up in the 70s, 80s and 90s the UEFA was always considered bigger and harder to win and this backs up what I was saying.

"Prior to its abolition, by UEFA the Cup Winners' Cup was regarded as the second most prestigious European club competition out of the three major tournaments, behind the European Cup/UEFA Champions League and ahead of the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League, although for a significant part of the sports press, its sportive level was lower than that of the UEFA Cup"

Sven Roeder 8:44 Wed May 18
Re: So now as long as Man U win the cup, we're in?
In the old days the priorities were winning the League & then winning the FA Cup.
That made the European Cup & ECWC the main Euro competitions.
The UEFA Cup came from a competition for whoever had the best Ferris wheel & fairy floss.

"Because it is, the same as the FA cup is bigger than the LC. "

When we won the ECWC the only other competition was the European cup. The Eufa cup came about in 1971.

i remember growing up thinking that ECWC was more important than the UEFA cup, which was always an also ran cup.

They should take away the group stages and make it a pure knock out competition to differentiate it from the CHUMPS League.
